Salman Butt released from prison

Just seven months into his three-and-a-half-year jail sentence for involvement in spot-fixing, disgraced former Pakistan cricket captain Salman Butt was, on Thursday, released under the British government's early prisoner release scheme.


Butt was released from Canterbury prison this morning after serving seven months of his 30-month sentence. He is expected to return to Pakistan at the earliest.
"Salman Butt has had to endure a great deal of suffering, strain, pressure and humiliation over many months both personally and on behalf of his family," his lawyer Yasin Patel said in a statement.

Cricket ace Sachin Tendulkar, who was sworn in as member of the Rajya Sabha on Monday, insisted that his focus will still be on the game and nothing else for the moment.

In fact, he was quick to declare that he does not want rumours doing the rounds that he has given up playing the game he has so graced for the last 23 years.

India cricket captain and goodwill ambassador of the Indian army Mahendra Singh Dhoni spent his second day in Kashmir interacting with officers, troops and hospitalised jawans. He also met with the new General Officer Commanding (GOC) designate, Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General Om Prakash.



"Today Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) M.S. Dhoni, on the second day of his tour, met the GOC designate of Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General Om Prakash, who is scheduled to take over the reins on June 9, in the presence of the chief of staff, Major General Rajesh Arya," a defence spokesman said.

Sachin begins new innings as Rajya Sabha member


Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Monday began a new innings as a member of Parliament. He took oath as member of Rajya Sabha to which he was nominated on April 26. 
Thirty-nine-year-old Tendulkar, who was accompanied by his wife Anjali, took oath in the chamber of Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari.
