Dravid bats for Test cricket, lie-detector tests

Dravid bats for Test cricket, lie-detector tests

Rahul Dravid has urged the ICC to cut down on the number of "meaningless" ODIs and focus on major tournaments like the World Cup, besides exploring the possibility of day-night Test cricket.

It must scale down this mad merry-go-round that teams and players find themselves in: heading off for two-Test tours and seven-match ODI series with a few Twenty20s thrown in.

"Since about, I think 1985, people have been saying that there is too much meaningless one-day cricket. Maybe, it's finally time to do something about it... anything makes more sense than a seven-match ODI series," he added.

Sehwag smashes world record 219

Sehwag smashes world record 219

Swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag smashed a world record 219 and became only the second batsman after Sachin Tendulkar to reach the 200-run landmark in One-Day Internationals, as India posted their highest one-day total of 418 for five in the fourth match against the West Indies in Indore, on Thursday.

I got a 300 with my flawed technique: Sehwag
Sehwag surpassed Tendulkar's 200 not out, made from 147 balls against South Africa in Gwalior on February 24 last year, when he square-cut Andre Russell for a boundary in the 44th over of the Indian innings to go past the 200 mark at the Holkar Stadium.

- Congratulate Virender Sehwag on his ODI double
He joined his idol Tendulkar in the record books as the only other cricketer to score double hundred in the limited overs game. India went on to win the match by 153 runs.

Ashwin provides the cheer after Tendulkar disappoints

Ashwin provides the cheer after Tendulkar disappoints

Even before the players walked out to the field to start the fourth day's proceedings in the third and final Test between India and West Indies , it was apparent who would hog the limelight during the early part.

As on the third day, the fans came in big numbers to the Wankhede to watch Sachin Tendulkar score that much-awaited century of centuries.

Meanwhile, Ashwin was on the one hand closing in on a maiden Test hundred, and on the other losing out on all but one partner.
To his credit, though, Pragyan Ojha] survived 14 balls, despite failing to open his account. It allowed his fellow-spinner rake up the required runs. Ashwin completed a richly deserved hundred by guiding a Rampaul delivery between slip and gully.

He, however, perished the next ball, misting a pull and giving a simple catch to Barath at midwicket. The 26-year-old's 103 came off just 118 balls and was inclusive a whopping 15 boundaries and a couple of sixes as well.

Test bastmen in 2011: Dravid No 1

Though One-day Internationals have taken the thrill out of Test matches and Twenty20 just pulled the rug from under Test cricket's feet, for the connoisseurs of the game, still, it is Tests that rule.

Thus, the year's leading performers in Tests, definitely deserve a standing ovation, as they have not only withstood the threatening bouncers that come with the longest version of the game, but also strived to stay fit and play consistently.

Two days into the Wankhede Test and the eventual result is a foregone conclusion. A draw seems imminent at this juncture.

1996 World Cup, Kambli's tears etched in fans' memories

1996 World Cup, Kambli's tears etched in fans' memories

Former India batsman Vinod Kambli has raised suspicion on the 1996 World Cup semi-final between India and Sri Lanka, saying he found "something amiss" in the game.

He claimed his doubt arose from skipper Mohammad Azharuddin's decision to field first even though it was unanimously decided that the team would bat after winning the toss. He said he was shocked when he came to know that the team had to field when everybody was mentally prepared to bat.

Now 21 months later, the talented batsman has been given a fresh hope with the selectors naming him in the squad, in place of Yuvraj Singh, for the third and final Test against the West Indies starting Tuesday at the Wankhede stadium.
